Europe - Part 9, May 31 - June 11, 2015

May 31, 2015 - Cartagena, Spain.  Walking around this beautiful town.  Very big nightlife, lots of people in the streets and activities, including bands and a military (naval) display for the 70th anniversary of the navy.

This photo is as we are leaving the golf resort at Malaga.  It is a giant golf ball that is a bridge and passage.

On the road to Cartagena.

Stopped here for lunch.  Do not even know the name of the town.

In Cartagena, Spain.  Along the waterfront in front of our hotel.

Military exhibition at the waterfront.

Walking around town.

Notice the walkways are all marble.  No cars allowed.

This is a site of some Roman ruins that were several buildings as well as an amphitheater that seated 7,000 people.  It is more than 2,000 years old.  It was only discovered about 40 years ago under some housing that was built over the top of the remnants.  Quite an impressive place.

Back to a walk on the streets, but it is late Sunday afternoon and everyone has gone home.

June 1, 2015 - On the road from Cartagena to Tarragona, Spain along the Spanish Riviera.

From our room in Tarragona.

Walked to the beach - 1 minute walk from the hotel.

June 2, 2015 - On the road to the country of Andorra.

June 3, 4, & 5, 2015 - In Andorra de la villa, Andorra.  Awesome LITTLE country.  A great ski resort country.  Nice town with very little parking and what there is costs $15.00 per day.  Stayed in the heart of town and had no view from the room, but a  great location.

Views from a trail that is high above the town.

Back in town.

Leaving town. The countryside of Andorra and Spain.

June 6, 7, & 8, 2015 - Marseilles, France.  A very big city.  Beautiful beaches and clean, clear blue water.  The weather was hot.  It took us forever to get here.  When we got into town, we had the worst traffic that you could ever imagine.  It took us over 2 hours to get from the city limits to our hotel.  I did not know until after I got to the hotel that the Rolling Stones were in town for a concert at the soccer stadium with 100,000 person capacity and all that traffic was causing the problems.  It did not help that our hotel was about a mile from the stadium and we had to go past the stadium to get to it.

Took a day trip out of town to a nearby small city for lunch.  It was about an hour away by car.

June 9, 2015 - Took the coast road to our next destination, San Remo, Italy, as it was only about 200 kilometers away.  We went through about 200 roundabouts and as many towns.  We stopped along the way for photos, and lunch, but it took us 10 hours to get to our hotel.  It did not help that our navigation system could not find the place and the address provided to us on the web was incorrect.

On the way to San Remo.

June 10, 2015 - Took a day trip from San Remo to Monte Carlo, Monaco.  The playground of the rich and famous.  It is known for its casino that has been around for more than 100 years and is considered the classiest in the world.  It has been a number of movies, including a James Bond movie.  there are also numerous mega yachts here.  The country is very small and considered an extremely expensive place to live, but it is a tax haven that rich people flock to.

Some of the yachts in the harbor.

Inside the casino, the photos that I was able to secretly take of the elaborate interior.  You are not allowed to take photos anywhere inside and you have to pay an entrance fee to go into where the gambling takes place.  Since I am not a gambler, I chose not to waste my money there.

June 11, 2015 - Pisa, Italy.  A look around town and the leaning tower of Pisa.

The wall that originally surrounded the city as protection.  It is 35 feet high and 6 feet thick.  The entire wall still stands.  It is about 4 1/2 miles long.

The Baptistery and Domo that are next to the leaning tower.

The baptistery.

The domo (church).  Extremely ornate inside and out.  The artistry is amazing.

The leaning tower.  It really does lean and at such an angle that it really appears to be ready to fall down.

The doors of the domo are in 3D sculpture and tell biblical stories.

Inside the domo.

Inside the tower.

Looking up from the center inside the tower.

Views from the top of the leaning tower.  It is really strange going up the circular stairs of a building that is on an angle.  It is also weird walking around outside the top of the tower when you are either walking up or down depending on the angle of the tower.

Bells at the top of the tower.
